Stagecoach passengers have made 50 million bus journeys paid through contactless since the company introduced the new payment method on its vehicles nationwide in a new £12m program.

All of the 7,000 buses in England, Scotland, and Wales now use this payment method, following the biggest roll-out of contactless by any bus service company in Britain in November of last year. This saw buses nationwide fitted with the tech, and buses at 100+ depots adapting to taking contactless payments over the course of the next year too.

Passengers can now pay for their travel with a contactless credit or debit card, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay devices.

Outside of London

Stagecoach’s bus service is the single largest merchant for contactless in Europe after Transport for London, with 33% of the company’s sales coming from it.

Contactless transactions are increasing in popularity, with increasing numbers of 15% yearly as passengers use the more convenient option. Over 1% of people are changing from card to contactless per month!

In Oxford, half of Stagecoach’s revenue is generated by people using contactless. Other areas that love to use it are the East of England with 43%, the West with 40%, and Manchester with 37%.

Stagecoach Chief Operating Officer Mark Threapleton said on the transition to contactless “Our multi-million investment in making it easier for customers to use the bus is transforming not only how they pay but their perception of travelling by bus.

“Buses are the smart, convenient, good value and sustainable way to travel. The popularity of the technology is continuing to grow, and we are looking at ways to use the contactless system to give customers even more reasons and confidence to choose the bus.”

As well as contactless, more than two million smart cards are used across Britain, with Stagecoach passengers making over 330 million smart card transactions yearly.

Stagecoach’s smartphone app also has a feature to buy tickets ahead of time to put on their smart card, or to present on their phone screen. It also includes journey planning, information on their journey and live tracking for their bus.
